2015 Gartelmann ‘Jessica’ Verdelho

Color, nose and palate

The nose of this wine starts out cautiously with a lick of lemons, then the classic character of verdelho streaks to the front with fruit salad and a wonderful vinous waft (yes, it actually smells like sweet white grapes!)
Exciting as the nose is, it is on the palate where this wine really shines… tropical fruits, pineapple and white peach play happily together, finishing crisp and dry with a luscious velvety feel.
Still at an early stage in its life course, this young wine is just a little richer than the Hunter’s more famous sister, Semillon.

Food recommendations: Enjoy with seafood, spicy foods or just as a drink on its own.
Cellaring potential: Drink while young.

Winemaker’s comments

The Jessica is a refreshing, vibrant, fruity wine made from 100% Verdelho. A wine full of flavour but with optimal acidity to give a zesty finish. Cold fermented in stainless steel, settled and fined and bottled early to retain freshness.

Vintage notes

The Hunter 2015 was an excellent vintage for whites. There was good rain in November when rain is needed, followed by well below average rainfalls between September and February. Most of our white grapes were harvested by the 28th of January.
Vineyard notes

Terroir: The soil and conditions in the Hunter Valley produce a Verdelho that is unique to this area. A zesty, rich wine with typical tropical fruit flavours and good acid. This Singleton vineyard has older vines running east west which help to avoid harsh direct summer heat on the fruit. The volcanic clay soil also adds some mineral structure to the wine.
